Tourists and Snakes at Bio-Ken
Monday, August 13th, 2007All Europe seems to come on holiday in August, along with children on school holidays. The snake farm staff need eyes in the back of their heads to ensure that no child has wandered into ‘no visitor’ areas, or has climbed the low walls surrounding some of our display pits. And especially to make sure that none are left behind when their party leaves!
The weather is beautiful one moment, then a gusty storm blows up with a brief shower. It is bringing out a lot of snakes and we are getting several snake calls a week. Luckily there have been no bites to deal with in the last week or so.
Chores - well, there are plenty of those! More visitors mean staff are occupied for much of the day in showing people safely around. We have taken on a new member, Mary Abilahi, to help out with the back-of-house work. Her home is near the Arabuko/Sokoke forest.
We are very pleased to have this little Snouted Night Adder brought in by one of Mary’s friends who found it on his farm near the edge of the Arabuko/Sokoke Forest. They are the smallest of the Night Adders and very pretty, not often found.
